The Moment That Changed Everything
We were at the vet for a routine checkup.
Dr. Peterson watched Max walk across the room. Her face changed.
"How long has he been moving like this?"
I didn't understand the question. "Like what?"
She knelt down. Touched his hips. His knees. His shoulders.
Max flinched.
"He's in significant pain," she said.
"His joints are inflamed.
The cartilage is wearing down."
My stomach dropped.
"But... he doesn't cry. He doesn't whine."
She looked at me with kind eyes.
"Dogs don't show pain like we do. By the time they limp or slow down, they've been hurting for months. Sometimes years."
The Guilt Hit Me Like a Truck
How did I miss this?
Every time he hesitated before jumping. Pain.
Every time he lagged behind on walks. Pain.
Every morning when he struggled to stand. Pain.
Max had been suffering. Right in front of me.
And I did nothing because I didn't know what to look for.
